![]() ![]() ![]() The week leading up to the trip, I decided to make it more of an intentional personal retreat and pilgrimage. However, recent revelations and release of information regarding clergy sex abuse and bishop cover-ups in the Church (in America) was cause for me to rethink how I approached this trip to Phoenix. I probably would have visited a church or two even if I would be just visiting friends. I figured that it would be a good, fun weekend to visit family friends and family of friends (#distinction) who live in Phoenix. Phoenix, Arizona, USA won! So now I had tickets for the end of August. Essentially, whatever city I could fly to with the cheapest round-trip airfare using American Airlines, I would purchase it. While searching Google Flights, I pretty much let prices determine where I would go. I had some dates in mind for the remainder of summer that would work with my schedule. But in this recent Phoenix pilgrimage, I originally had fun intentions, but had to turn it into a more legit pilgrimage.Īt the beginning of July, I searched Google Flights to see where I could fly for cheap. Regardless of my initial motivations to fly, to me, any trip is worth having a pilgrimage portion to it. Sometimes I don’t need a lot of motivation to go fly somewhere. The high-tech drones used are equipped with on-board video cameras that transmit FPV (first person view) images to headsets worn by the pilots, allowing them to steer the tiny aircraft around the race circuit.This post may contain affiliate links. The events can take place inside or outside, while each pilot taking part has a helper to assist him or her. Multi-rotor FPV – or drone – racing competitions consist of successive races in which several radio- controlled model aircraft fight it out to be the fastest around a pre-determined circuit. This year’s competition involved a total of 669 pilots from 41 countries, up from 435 pilots from 37 countries last year. Played out over 22 events in 17 different countries around the world, it kicked off in Bali, Indonesia in April and closed with the Phoenix World Cup event in Prilep, Macedonia earlier this month. Of the first eight pilots, six are Juniors.ĭrone racing is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and this latest edition of the FAI Drone Racing World Cup was the biggest yet. Joining him on the podium are Poland’s Jan Wielgosz, also a Junior competitor, in second place, and David Spacek of Czechoslovakia in third.
